The Role of Biomarkers in Bladder Cancer Diagnosis
The role of biomarkers in diagnosis and monitoring of cancers of the bladder is encouraging. They enable non-invasive tests and reduce the dependence on invasive and distressing cystoscopes.
Important among them is the NMP22 which indicates tumor cell turnover and BTA tests, which identifies proteins thought to be present in cancer cells. These tests have different sensitivity and specificity rates; NMP22 has 62-75 % sensitivity, and BTA stat ranges 57-83 % in sensitivity, all of which assist in the diagnosis and follow-up of BC for recurrence.
