Trap Bar Deadlifts. What is it and why should you utilize it in rehab and training?
Trap bar deadlifts are a valuable exercise to target the posterior chain, quads, and core while training a functional movement pattern: the hinge and squat (aka picking up a basket of laundry, picking up a baby carrier, picking up grocery bags, etc).
Trap bar deadlifts are also utilized as a modification to conventional deadlifts. Trap bar deadlifts put less strain on the low back as it shifts the torso into more of an upright position and more of the load is placed onto the quads. It’s a sneaky one, but yes…trap bar deadlifts demand more quad recruitment & activation = increased quad development!
Especially for people just learning how to hinge properly, the trap bar deadlift is easier to learn. It also is perfect for those with mobility deficits (those who are unable to maintain a neutral spine at greater depths of a hinge) as the handles sit up higher.
Why let pain prevent you from lifting when there’s so many movement variations that target the same muscle groups! If you’re in pain and your provider tells you to stop lifting, come talk to me first.
