Five Things to Check Before Calling for Furnace Repair
If your gas furnace is not turning on, there are a few simple things homeowners can check before calling an HVAC technician. Many issues are caused by airflow problems or dirty components that stop the system from running safely.
Here are the most common trouble spots:
✅ Check the air filter. A clogged filter can cause overheating and shut the system down. Replace it if it looks dirty, then reset the furnace.
✅ Look at the diagnostic light. Before resetting the system, check the sight glass for a flashing code. This gives helpful clues about the issue.
✅ Make sure the blower spins freely. A stuck blower or a bad capacitor can prevent the furnace from running.
✅ Listen to the inducer motor. If it sounds loud, rough, or restricted, it may prevent the pressure switch from allowing the furnace to start. Blocked intake or exhaust pipes can cause the same problem.
✅ Check the igniter. If you do not see an orange glow during startup, the igniter may be failing.
