A patient presented to our oral surgery clinic with persistent pain and swelling two weeks after a tooth extraction at her dentist office. Despite multiple rounds of antibiotics, the symptoms did not improve.
Further evaluation revealed a severe infection that had progressed into the jawbone (osteomyelitis). Due to concern for the extent of the infection and potential airway compromise, the patient was taken to the hospital for urgent surgical drainage. Cultures were obtained to guide the most effective antibiotic therapy.
Thankfully, with prompt surgical care and the right treatment plan, the patient is now recovering well. The photos shared in this post were taken 5 days after surgery, and the swelling is expected to continue improving as healing progresses.
Our board-certified oral surgeon, Dr. Ghadiali, not only performs routine procedures such as extractions and implants, but also manage complex infections, traumatic injufires, and benign pathology.
