How to shut off the water to your home due to a plumbing emergency
Step 1 - Find your water heater and you'll find a valve on the water line on right side pipe. Turn it right. If its a long handle it will be a quarter turn. If its a circular handle it will rotate right until tight.
Step 2 - check for other valves nearby in the same room as your water heater and shut them off as well. Most main shut off valves are nearby.
Step 3. If these efforts didn't shut the water off you can find your water meter down near the street and use a wrench or Meter key to turn it off.
Step 4 - if still unsuccessful, call your local water authority and they typically have an emergency hotline and response team available for plumbing emergencies where the water needs to be shut off.
