Silver fillings can last a very long time! They tend to stay intact and in place, however the tooth around can start to break down. In order to rebuild the tooth properly, we must remove the old silver filling along with any decay. If your dental fillings are defective or show decay, it's important to replace them. Untreated decay may eventually lead to an infection (abscess).
Here are some reasons why your silver fillings may need to be replaced:
1. A new cavity underneath or at the edge of an existing filling.
2. An opening at the edge of the filling.
3. An overhang at the edge of the filling.
4. A crack in the tooth around the filling
5. Broken tooth
