I was a litigator in Big Law. I worked on bet the company cases: major clients, massive challenges, even bigger headlines. I was good at it, but I didn’t enjoy it.
Looking back, there were early warning signs.
• Why did I attend every single (usually empty) law school career panel?
• Why did I love the interview process while everyone else dreaded it?
• Why was strategic research and networking during OCI one of the more exciting parts of law school for me?
A few years into practicing, I started to lean into this whisper rather than away from it. I:
✅ Got involved in recruiting at my law firm
🤝 Conducted informational interviews with recruiting and PD pros
🔍 Devoured everything by NALP (professional ass’n for legal talent)
📚 Took courses on the side to build my skills
A few days into my first recruiting job…I knew I’d never go back. It combined everything that energizes me:
✨ Connection with people
✨ Strategic thinking
✨ Branding & industry knowledge
✨ Big-picture planning.
Every day, I get to help people navigate their careers and design lives that energize them.
Two Key Lessons
1️⃣ Don’t do it just because you’re good at it.
2️⃣ Don’t ignore the voice in your head. Start to dip your toe in the water with informational interviews, coursework, stretching your role internally. Give yourself the shot to explore.
