We opened up a kitchen wall in an older home this week and found this galvanized kitchen drain line completely rotted out.
The pipe walls had deteriorated to the point of structural failure. The metal had broken down from decades of corrosion, allowing water to leak into the wall cavity and cause significant damage.
By the time we exposed it, there was already moisture damage to surrounding materials and framing.
Galvanized drain lines in homes built prior to the 1970s are a common failure point. Unlike supply lines, these often go unnoticed because they only leak when the sink or dishwasher is draining. That means slow, hidden damage over time.
Warning signs we often see before failure:
• Recurring kitchen sink backups
• Damp cabinets or swollen baseboards
• Musty odor near the sink
• Water staining inside the wall
• Older original galvanized plumbing
If you’re in Portland, Milwaukie, Clackamas, or surrounding areas and your home still has original galvanized drain lines, it’s worth having them evaluated before a hidden leak turns into major water damage.
We handle kitchen drain line replacements, wall-open repairs, and plumbing upgrades for older homes throughout the Portland metro area.
If something feels off with your kitchen drain, don’t ignore it.
