How Long Does Plaster Take to Dry – And When Can You Paint It?
One of the most common questions we get is: “How long will it take for my plaster to dry before I can paint?” The answer depends on the job and conditions — but here’s what you need to know.
Standard drying time:
Fresh plaster typically takes 3 to 5 days to dry per coat. This can stretch to 7–10 days in cold or damp conditions, especially on bonding or backing coats.
Watch the colour:
Wet plaster is dark brown or grey. As it dries, it lightens to a pale, uniform pink. Wait until it’s fully dry before mist coating — painting too early can lead to peeling and patchy finishes.
Speed it up?
Open windows, use fans, and keep heating gentle. Don’t blast with dehumidifiers or high heat — it can cause cracking or poor bonding.
When can I paint?
Once the plaster is fully dry and pale pink, start with a mist coat (a watered-down emulsion). After that, you’re safe to apply your top coats for a flawless finish.
