Although we live in Northern Michigan, our furnaces and boilers are not used to running as hard as they have been for the past few days. We have received many calls this weekend where the furnace was actually running with nothing wrong with it, but it's just having a uch harder time keeping up due to the extreme temps.
Here are a few tips to check on your furnace for proper operation before calling a pro:
1. Change or clean your filters.
2. Inspect the Pilot Light/Flame: A properly functioning gas furnace should have a blue flame. A yellow or flickering flame may indicate improper combustion or a carbon monoxide risk.
3. Keep vents and registers clear of any obstructions (especially ice and snow)!
4. Check your thermostat batteries and/or settings.
5.Seal Ductwork: Inspect ducts for leaks or gaps and seal them with mastic sealant or duct tape to prevent heat loss.
6. Monitor for Unusual Noises: Listen for banging, squealing, or rattling sounds, which could indicate mechanical issues.
If anything is very apparently out of the ordinary, feel free to give us a call. We have emergency services available. Stay warm, friends!
