We removed the banisters, sanded and stained them to match the builtin cabinets in the office (which was a project we had previously completed for the homeowners) and replaced the spindles with more modern oak, finished to match.
The two end poles at the bottom of the stairs were larger than the rest and had to be custom made larger, with a hole down the middle to accommodate a through bolt.
