A Metal building seems simple enough. But here when installing an electrical service. Everything is exposed. That is why it is important to run your circuits in conduit or in metal clad wire.
In a shop or pole building everything actually is too the extreme. Because it is subject to not only the weather but to potential physical damage.
I like to use the rule of thumb that if you were chopping wood and you can swing your ax and hit the wire. it needs to be physically protected.
Although you may say the chances of actually chopping wood in that the vicinity is slim, you never know what may happen especially in an open and exposed building such as a shop or pole building.
