Patients have been saying how they feel that TMS has opened a new chapter in their lives. The fascinating insight is that what was once felt to be something that could not change, (ie. feeling depressed, hopeless, and destined to stay so), is not at all that way. Because these feelings are so strong we tend to think they are who we really are, that they can not change and that we are fated to always feel them. But the reality is quite different. TMS shows that. When a patient feels calm for the first time in memory and they find the depression has lifted, suddenly a new way of being becomes possible. The possibility that we can live depression free becomes real. Hope becomes possible. If by simply altering a neural network we can be free of depression, it opens up the question that maybe we are more than what we feel. Perhaps the world holds more promise for us than we previously thought. How wonderful that is!
