Delay is a side effect of antidepressant drugs; this effect can be used therapeutically for men with P.E. These two Australian studies -- both single-blind, randomized, crossover trials -- examined the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor paroxetine as a treatment for P.E. in men without depression.
The first study (26 men) compared a 20-mg dose of paroxetine, given as a single dose several hours before, with placebo. After four weeks of this "as needed" regimen, the average time was 3.4 minutes with paroxetine and 0.5 minutes with placebo, a significant difference. No adverse effects were reported.
