Reflective tape is essential for road safety since it greatly improves vehicle visibility in low light, which lowers the chance of accidents. This is especially true for large trucks and trailers. To encourage this safety precaution, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has set certain guidelines for the use of reflective tape on commercial vehicles.

Trailers that are wider than 80 inches and have a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 10,000 pounds are required by DOT requirements to have DOT C2 reflective tape installed. This tape is distinguished by its two-inch standard width and alternating red and white design. At least 50% of the trailer's length should have the tape applied horizontally, with the tape placed between 15 and 60 inches above the road. Two inverted L-shaped patterns of white tape, each with 12-inch legs, should be positioned at the top corners of the trailer's rear, while a continuous strip should run the whole width at the bottom rear.

Although these regulations are applicable to trailers, straight trucks (cars without detachable trailers) are exempt. Although it is not required by DOT requirements, applying reflective tape on straight trucks can further increase visibility and safety.
