Sometimes in areas where it may not be safe to use firearms, the most appropriate method may be to use a cage trap. Once trapped foxes must be destroyed as quickly and humanely as possible.
Trapping is most effective at night due to the nocturnal habits of foxes. Regular checks of traps are crucial to reduce stress on trapped foxes. Legally, under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, traps need to be checked at least once every 24 hours but realistically, in urban areas it’s not advisable to leave traps unattended as there is a risk that pets such as cats or dogs may become trapped and injured.
Captured foxes from an urban environment cannot be released into the countryside. Transporting and relocating foxes to an unfamiliar environment will cause them stress and is illegal.
