Different types of mold produce different types of mycotoxins. For example, Aspergillus (the most prevalent mold group in the environment) produce aflatoxin, ochratoxin, sterigmatocystin, gliotoxin and citrinin. These toxins mainly target the liver. The most common route of infection is through the respiratory system. This can cause severe asthma when the mold colonizes the lung.
Another example is a common mycotoxin produced by Penicillium called ochratoxin which damages the kidneys and causes cancer.
