Certified Translation, Notarization, and Apostille:
These are distinct steps (not necessarily in the same order) for making documents legally valid abroad.
A certified translation ensures accuracy of the translation by a notary who verifies the translator's signature on the certification of the translated document; and an apostille authenticates the notary's signature for international use.
A certified translation is a certification that is accompanied by a signed statement (certificate of accuracy) from the translator or translation company attesting to its completeness and accuracy. Translation is for official, legal, or educational documents that are not in the local language of the receiving country. The translator signs the certificate of accuracy in front of a notary to attest to the translation's validity.
Notaries act as government agents to verify signer ID, and ensure signers willingness to sign without duress and the signer's awareness of the document content.
Apostille authenticates the notary signature on the document that is destined to a foreign country. The apostille is issued by a designated government official of the state where the document originated.
