I learned a long time ago that the fastest way to lose trust is to pretend you did nothing wrong.
We all make mistakes. I do too.
When I do, I say it plainly. I screwed up.
Recently I forgot to include an irrigation system in a listing. Not the end of the world, but still my oversight. I did not blame my admin. I did not deflect. I fixed it and told the seller I missed it.
That is it.
Trying to cover up a mistake damages your integrity. Once that is gone, you have nothing.
When you own it, most people respond with grace. They appreciate the honesty. They know you are human.
In this business, your word matters more than anything written in a contract. If people cannot trust you to admit a small mistake, they will never trust you with the big decisions.
Responsibility is not weakness.
It is leadership.
And I would rather protect my reputation and my client's confidence than protect my ego.
