An Olympic Throwback!
In 1979 when Mary Therese Friel was competing in the Miss USA Pageant (as Miss New York), her state costume was the Olympic Torch Bearer, welcoming in the 1980 Winter Olympics.
New York State hosted the XIII Winter Olympics in 1980 at Lake Placid and this was a very big deal at that time. After winning the Miss USA Title, Mary Therese was invited to Lake Placid during the Olympic Games for an interview and promotion, with Sports Illustrated. This was the year of the famed "Miracle on Ice."
