A recent service call in Pacific Beach involved a Scotsman ice machine that was producing ice normally most of the time but occasionally developed a drainage issue. During certain cycles, the drain pump would fail to activate, causing water to overflow into the ice bin. As a result, excess water mixed with freshly produced ice, creating large ice clumps and inconsistent ice production.
After a complete diagnostic inspection, we confirmed that the refrigeration system, water inlet valve, circulation components, and ice-making functions were operating correctly. The problem was isolated to the drain system, where the drain pump was intermittently failing and not removing water as designed.
Intermittent drain pump failures can be difficult to catch because the machine may appear to work normally for hours or even days before the issue returns. Left unresolved, these problems can lead to ice contamination, reduced production, water leaks, and unnecessary strain on other components.
If your ice machine is producing oversized ice clumps, leaking water, or showing inconsistent performance, professional diagnosis can help prevent more expensive repairs later.
