Mark Henderson Drum Lessons

I've been taking drum lessons (as an adult!) with Mark for about 2x years now and I couldn't be happier with my experience. Not only is he super talent and knows what he's talking about, but he's also a kind and a patient person, who knows how to make lessons fun and not stagnant. I'm so happy with my progress working with Mark and would recommend him to anyone looking for drum lessons! It's very hard to find someone you're comfortable taking lessons with and Mark is the full package!

I can't say enough good things about Mark. I have absolutely no musical experience (and/or talent) whatsoever but have wanted to learn how to play the drums since I was a kid. Learning a new skill as a 30-something is humbling beyond belief, but Mark is patient and kind and knows his stuff. I can't recommend him enough! Also, ladies, if you're worried about going to meet a stranger (man) 1:1, he's a green flag and you're fine.

Mark has been providing drum lessons for my daughter. He is very knowledgeable and is himself a very accomplished drummer. He has provided my daughter with the basic foundation of drumming, including techniques, theory and reading music. Her drumming skills have greatly improved since first starting with Mark. I also love how he meets where she is at and will help her learn songs that speak to her, as she brings in her own music to their lesson. My daughter has repeatedly informed me how much she likes Mark, his easy-ongoing nature, his skills and drumming knowledge that she feels continues to support and continued progress in her own skill development. I continue to witness her progress as she has me sit in the room at home as she practices her drumming. We are very pleased with Mark and will continue having our daughter see him for drum lessons.

My son has taken drum lessons with Mark for a couple of years and absolutely LOVED it! I can't recommend Mark enough. He is not only a talented drummer but truly has a gift and passion for teaching. He carefully observes how each student learns best and adjusts accordingly. If you are looking for the best drum teacher in Richmond for any age, Mark is your man!

Mark is first of all, an INCREDIBLE drummer. But we all knew that. :) I've been taking lessons from him the past couple of years and it's been nothing short of a great experience. He's communicative, attentive, creative, and just downright fun. I would 11/10 recommend anyone take lessons from him!

I've been drumming in one way shape or form for 29 years, am 37, and LOVE what Mark's been able to open up in my drumming. I only had lessons when I was in music school (briefly), and have been mostly self taught. So when I realized I was meeting the limit of my creativity for teaching myself, I read these reviews, reached out to Mark, and he worked me into his schedule right away. It's been nothing but mind opening, rewarding, and clearly progressed my drumming. He's a very laid back teacher with a really good ear. He'll catch everything you're doing with ridiculous precision, and that makes his feedback so good. He really takes the mystery out of some aspects of drumming, explain them in very practical terms, and sets a realistic vision for how I can meet my drumming goals. My first lesson started with "what do you want to work on?" I had some loose ideas that we've adjusted overtime, but given how much the exercises he gave me and the perspective he presents have already helped my drumming, I truly suspect he's got bigger lessons than just what I want to work on. Anyway, these reviews are what made me commit to reaching out, so if you're thinking about lessons, you should reach out too. I'm realllllly glad that I did :-)

Since high school I've taken lessons from 10-15 different drum teachers in numerous cities (Montreal QC, Toronto ON, Halifax NS, Ottawa ON, Gainesville FL, and Richmond, VA) and I can say, unequivocally, that Mark has been among the top two instructors I've studied with...perhaps even the best one. In the last year and a half my reading, timing, technique, accuracy, and versatility have all improved about 100% and I've learned a bunch of new rhythms. I am, without a doubt, a better drummer than I've ever been and I attribute that mainly to Mark's teaching style, the quality of his teaching studio, and his use of very helpful percussion-related technology.

Mark is Awesome! Highly recommend. I cannot say enough good things about our experience. He can adapt to any level of player from beginner to seasoned pro and provide details, insight and routines for any genre of music. He provides the right balance of technical mastery,. understanding and motivation and has been a perfect fit for us.

My daughter takes lessons from Mark and I am so happy with how quickly she started to play music...not just beat on the drums. It is obvious he is an incredibly talented musician. I have taken, observed and given music lessons so it was easy to recognize how good of a Teacher he is, too. Most of all he is an approachable, genuine guy without an ego. My impression is he cares about his students. I confidently recommend Mark.

Mark is a great teacher for anyone. If your child is interested in learning to play the drums, this is the guy you want to teach him/her with all the fundamentals of playing music and having fun with it. He works very well with people and gives good advice and lesson plans for his students along with sound encouragement to keep the student interested. He offers private one on one lessons in his home studio at reasonable prices and makes the experience comfortable for all. I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with him over the summer months watching/listening to him teach my daughter how to play. If you're reading these reviews you can stop here.
