What Happens If You Fail the U.S. Citizenship Test?
Failing the U.S. citizenship test does not automatically end your journey toward becoming a U.S. citizen. If you fail the English test, civics test, or both during your naturalization interview, USCIS will usually provide a second opportunity to retake the portions you did not pass within approximately 60 to 90 days.
If you pass the failed section during the retest, your naturalization application can continue moving forward. However, failing the second examination may result in a denial of your application. In many cases, applicants may still have options, such as requesting a review of the decision or reapplying in the future.
Common reasons for failing include insufficient preparation, language difficulties, interview anxiety, and misunderstanding eligibility for testing exemptions. Applicants can improve their chances by studying USCIS materials, practicing English skills, attending citizenship classes, and seeking legal guidance.
At Lively Law Firm, we help immigrants throughout the United States navigate the naturalization process and address challenges that may arise during citizenship testing.
