Florida Alimony & Retirement: What You Need to Know
If you’re paying durational alimony in Florida and thinking about retirement, here’s some good news: under Florida’s new alimony laws, retirement at normal retirement age (65–67) can be a reason to ask the court to reduce—or even end—your alimony payments.
⚖️ But it’s not automatic. You must file a petition and show the court that:
• Your retirement is in good faith (not just to avoid paying alimony).
• Your income has been reduced because of retirement.
• The other spouse’s financial needs can still be met fairly.
Every case is unique. Courts will look closely at your health, work history, and finances before deciding whether to modify or terminate alimony.
👉 If you are nearing retirement—or depend on alimony for support—it’s important to plan ahead and know your rights.
