Can I Sue if I Slip and Fall in a Store?
Everyone trips. But what if you or your child falls and gets hurt at a grocery store, a mall, or an apartment building? Your first thought might be, "I'm so clumsy." But you should ask, "Was it safe?"
Property owners have a job. They are supposed to keep their floors, stairs, and parking lots safe for you. When they don't, and you get hurt, it's not your fault.
Here’s a fact: The National Floor Safety Institute (NFSI) says that 55% of all slip-and-fall accidents are caused by a hazardous floor.
What is a "hazardous" floor?
● A puddle from a leaky freezer.
● A freshly mopped area with no "Wet Floor" sign.
● A torn piece of carpet on a staircase.
● A dark parking lot with broken lights.
These are things the owner should have known about and fixed. If your child runs around a corner and slips on a spill that’s been there for an hour, the owner may be responsible.
If you fall:
1. Report it. Tell a manager or the landlord right away.
2. Take a picture. Use your phone to get a photo of why you fell.
3. Get names. If anyone saw you fall, ask for their name and number.
4. See a doctor.
Our team has helped families hold property owners accountable. We know how to find out if the owner was "negligent."
