Natural Pest Repellent Myths

Natural pest repellants are on the rise. Their popularity is perfectly justifiable, considering the growing interest in eco-friendly living. The common belief is that natural means safer and more environmentally friendly.

However, this might not always be the whole story.

Here are some myths about natural pest repellents:

All natural repellents are safe
“Natural” might generally mean safer and healthier, but that’s not always true. Some substances, albeit natural, can still be dangerous for humans, pets, and insects. For example, some undiluted essential oils can be toxic when ingested or touch the skin.

Citronella candles are highly effective
Citronella candles may work to some degree, but their effectiveness is limited. They can repel mosquitos but only work in a small area. Also, if there is any wind, their effectiveness diminishes.

Ultrasonic pest repellers work on all pests
Ultrasonic pest repellers claim to use high-frequency sound to push pests away. Whether or not they work is up for debate, though. Research shows some promise, but results are mixed. Some pests don’t respond to these frequencies; therefore, these devices won’t work on them.

Vinegar repels all types of pests
Vinegar can be good at deterring some pests. However, it’s not effective universally. Also, it’s worth remembering that vinegar doesn’t have long-lasting effects and could damage plants and surfaces without careful and proper use.
