A key downside of semi-transparent deck stain is that it can look uneven when applied to a mix of new and older wood. Fresh boards tend to absorb more stain, while weathered or previously exposed wood absorbs differently, often creating noticeable color variations—especially after repairs or board replacements.
Semi-transparent stains also provide less UV protection than more opaque options, which can cause the finish to fade faster and reduce its overall lifespan. For decks with varied wood conditions, semi-transparent stain may not produce a consistent, uniform look.
