Why is primer so important in preventing paint problems like peeling and bubbling?
To understand this, it helps to know how paint works. When paint is applied, it starts as a liquid and then dries into a solid film. During this curing process, the solvents in the paint evaporate, and the coating bonds to the surface underneath. If the surface is not properly sealed or prepared, the paint can’t bond correctly.
This is where primer becomes crucial. A quality primer creates a stable, sealed layer that paint can grip. Without primer, the surface may allow moisture or air to escape. As the paint cures, this trapped air or moisture causes bubbles to form — a process called off-gassing. These bubbles weaken the bond and often lead to peeling.
Bubbling and peeling are two of the most common failures in residential painting, and both are usually the result of skipping primer or improper prep.
At Jose’s Painting we never cut corners. We clean, sand, and prime surfaces before painting so the finish cures evenly and bonds properly. That means no bubbling, no premature peeling, and a longer-lasting paint job you can trust.
