What is the difference between limewash and German smear, and which one should you choose?
German smear uses wet mortar that is spread across the brick to create a rustic, aged look. It covers most of the original brick and is permanent. It also blocks breathability, which can trap moisture and cause long-term issues.
Limewash is a mineral paint made with slaked lime and water. It soaks into the brick and bonds through calcification, becoming part of the surface. It allows the brick to breathe, will not peel, and creates a soft, natural finish that enhances rather than hides the texture.
Limewash can also be adjusted or removed in the first few days and fades beautifully over time.
Why we recommend limewash:
• Breathable and long-lasting
• Easier to touch up
• Does not damage the brick
• Requires less maintenance
We use Romabio Classico Limewash, made specifically for masonry. It calcifies into the brick for a durable, matte finish. Available in many tones, or we can help you create a custom shade.
