Why is my deck paint peeling?

Deck paint or solid stain can start peeling when water gets trapped under the coating, when the surface was not prepped properly, or when the wrong product is used for the type of wood. In Marietta’s humid climate, moisture is the biggest enemy of horizontal surfaces. When the wood expands and contracts with weather and water can’t escape, the paint loses adhesion and begins to lift.

The right way to fix this is to start fresh. First, pressure wash to remove dirt, mildew, and any loose coating. Sand down peeling areas or strip the deck completely if needed to reach bare wood. Allow the deck to dry thoroughly before coating. We use Sherwin Williams SuperDeck and Benjamin Moore Woodluxe for their superior adhesion, flexibility, and weather protection. These products are designed to move with the wood instead of sitting on top like standard paint.

For new decks, a semi transparent stain is a great choice. It soaks into the wood instead of forming a film, so it will never chip or peel. It does need reapplication about every 1.5 years, or sooner if the deck gets full sun, but the upkeep is simple.

We back our deck coatings with a 1.5 year warranty on horizontal surfaces. To keep the finish performing, we recommend seasonal pressure washing serviced by us to remove buildup that can break down the coating over time. Regular care, proper prep, and premium products ensure your deck stays beautiful and protected year after year.
