What is limewash for brick and how is it different from regular masonry paint?
Limewash is a mineral-based finish made from lime and water that has been used for centuries on brick and stone. Unlike regular masonry paint, which sits on the surface and can eventually peel or trap moisture, limewash soaks into the brick. As it cures, it calcifies and becomes part of the masonry itself.
Because it penetrates rather than coating, limewash allows the brick to breathe. This means moisture can escape naturally, preventing the bubbling, flaking, or chipping that often happens with traditional paints. Limewash also creates a soft, natural look that can be adjusted or even washed off within the first few days. Over time, it develops a beautiful patina that ages gracefully.
Regular masonry paint, by contrast, creates a solid opaque layer and works well for full coverage, but it is not as breathable. It may need maintenance sooner, especially in humid climates.
At Jose’s Painting we use Romabio lime-based products because they combine old-world durability with modern performance. Whether you want a soft limewash finish, a solid opaque look, or a stucco-style lime slurry, we can help you choose the best option for your brick home.
