Paying off your car loan early could tank your credit score.
Sounds backwards, right? Credit expert Micah Smith says it happens constantly. When you pay off an installment loan, the account closes. That positive payment history stops calculating into your score. Same goes for student loans and mortgages.
The real move? Keep utilization under 7%. If you have a $1,000 credit card limit, keep your balance at $60 or less. Credit utilization makes up 30% of your FICO score. Payment history is 35%. And here's the trick most people miss: your issuer reports to the bureaus on your statement closing date, not your due date. Pay down before that date hits.
Want a faster win? Call your card company and ask for a rate reduction. 84% who ask get approved, but only 23% actually ask.
