Our experience with this firm started off fairly well. We started with a double-bathroom renovation, which went smoothly in the beginning. They were reasonably punctual, and work progressed approximately at the pace they outlined. The major issue we found was that both bathroom ceiling vents were not properly installed. Both had been vented into the attic rather than to the exterior of the house as required by code. When we asked them to fix this, we met with pushback and it took months to correct.
We then proceeded with the kitchen renovation. After the demo, the project slowed to a crawl. Work would only progress in bursts when we asked them when they would be on site. We had detailed drawings and plans that we reviewed before starting and would come home to find that they were not adhered to. When we pointed this out, we were told we would have to pay to redo the work. During the drywall installation, we noted significant issues with the boarding. We had a professional drywaller in to look at the job, and he said that to have a good result, it would all have to be redone. When we pointed this out we told that it would be fixed in the mudding process, which it was not. See pictures for examples of the work quality. When we insisted that it be remedied, they hired a 3rd party who did the best they could in the circumstances, however, because the boarding was not redone, it is still very noticeable.
There were also instances where we received invoices for work that had not been completed. We were billed for the installation and insulation of a skylight, however when a subcontractor went into the attic he told us that the skylight well had not been insulated. When we called the skylight installers, they told us that the contractor had specifically told them NOT to insulate the skylight well, that they would do it themselves, and that they wanted the insulation removed from their invoice. The contractor then provided us with the invoice including insulation, without having insulated it. When we presented this to them, we were offered no resolution because they were going on holiday for 1 month. That was December. They had left us with an uninsulated house in December. We ended up having got hire the skylight installers. There were also occasions when we came home to see the house filthy, called the sub-trades to complain, and were told that the contractor had instructed them NOT to clean as they would be coming by the site. Then, they didn’t show and the site wasn’t cleaned at all.
In the end, we terminated the contract before the completion of the job due to severe delays and no-shows. We were assured that they would be on-site, or that sub-trades would be on site, at specific times and they would not We were told week after week that the project would be finished “next week.” We gave up in December 2023 when we were quoted a July 2023 completion date.
