Bold, not beachy: rethinking coastal architecture in Huskisson.
This custom duplex in Huskisson steps away from the classic white weatherboard coastal look. The exterior is finished in Shou Sugi Ban, a traditional Japanese charred timber cladding technique, giving the home a deep, dark tone that sits naturally against the surrounding bushland and echoes the blackened eucalyptus trunks nearby.
As a custom home builder working across the Shoalhaven and Illawarra, CKS Projects built this project in collaboration with Duplex Building Design, translating an architecturally distinctive brief into two liveable, enduring homes. The result is a sculptural, monochrome exterior that feels calm and considered rather than loud.
It's proof that coastal design doesn't have to follow the expected formula. Sometimes the strongest response to a bushland or waterside site is bold materiality and restraint, not white render and glass.
