Faulty PowerPoint Repair – Safety First ⚡
Today I was at a property where a PowerPoint that was showing an earth fault. On inspection, I found it had been wired with the wrong size cable (1.5mm instead of 2.5mm), making it unsafe. After checking under the floor, I discovered the wiring was not compliant with current standards.
⚠️ No Earth Connection – Why It’s Dangerous
The earth wire is a safety pathway that carries fault current away if something goes wrong, like a short or damaged appliance. Without an earth connection:
• Metal parts of appliances (like fridges, ovens, or power tools) can become live.
• Anyone touching that metal surface could receive an electric shock.
• Safety switches (RCDs) may not trip properly, leaving the fault undetected.
Undersized cable (1.5mm instead of 2.5mm):
- PowerPoints are designed for higher loads. Using a cable that’s too small can cause it to overheat when appliances draw power. Over time, this heat can melt insulation, damage wiring, and increase the risk of fire.
At Haven Electrical, safety is always our top priority so if something doesn’t look right, we make sure it’s fixed the right way.
