Doing the Right Thing Even When It Costs You
Sometimes, doing the right thing in real estate doesn’t feel good in the moment, but it always pays off in the long run.
Early in my career, I had a family move here from another state where refrigerators always conveyed with the home. The listing they contracted on didn’t include one, but I forgot to mention that Texas is different.
When we did our initial showing, the home was vacant but the fridge was there. When we did our final walkthrough, the fridge was gone.
They were disappointed — understandably so. And while I could’ve simply said, “It wasn’t included, that’s a Texas thing” I knew the right thing to do was make it right.
So, I sent them to the hardware store and told them, “Pick the one you want.”
Was it ideal? No.
Did it cost me money? A lot.
Did it save the relationship and build lifelong trust? Absolutely.
Their review still makes me smile:
“Ashley turned what could’ve been a frustrating day into one that showed her true integrity. That’s why we’ve referred her to three friends since closing.”
Doing the right thing never goes out of style.
