I've been with Dr. V nearly since she opened. I like having a privately owned Veterinary clinic where the owner is "the Vet". She always been friendly and honest, and will discuss all aspects of our fur kids care. on one occasion through the years, with Schatzi, she consulted on the emergency care and diagnosis with the other clinic, and when the time came to make the hard and best call for our boy, she was kind, compassionate, and honest enough to tell us that we couldn't do anything more for him. She's always been that way with us, with all 7 of our Schnauzers through the years. A Vet that honestly cares more for the patient than her pocketbook is rare. The other vets who have joined her clinic since we started with her are in the same category as I hold her. Truly loving and caring of their patients.
I know how difficult it is to keep a private clinic open these days against the "Big Box" care facilities is a daunting challenge, which sadly drives up costs to remain in business when you can't get that "big volume" discount for test kits, meds, etc. Happy Tails is, as far as I know, the last privately owned Vet in the Pasadena area, and while treatment and care may seem expensive (in lieu of the above), the care and treatment of your family members is top notch and personal.
I have several items I could share about Dr. Vera where she went way beyond what you would expect. She knows I look for the best price on meds, or supplies. When I had a diabetic dog who needed insulin, she taught me how to the curve studies so I could avoid a visit and cost expense, I just sent her the results and she told me when to change to dose or frequency. When I was getting insulin from a Vet Supplier, she wanted to be sure of my source, so she offered to price match saving me additional cost.
When my diabetic crossed over, I had a bunch of insulin which I didn't want to toss out. I mentioned it to her, and she told me she had another patient who could benefit and was on a tight budget. That excess supply, insulin and syringes, went to a family in need. I myself benefitted like that for another medication that one of my other pups needed. If you have a situation of the unbearable loss of a pet, don't toss that medication, talk to Happy Tails, and see if someone else can be helped.
In closing, Happy Tails, is one of the few remaining privately owned Veterinary Clinics where they know your pet, you join a family, the care is top notch, and YOU will never be rushed in and out on an assembly line, so don't plan on merely going in and going out; you're going to get a conversation and good exam.
