Understanding Chimney Flashing
Chimney flashing is crucial for a leak-proof roof and chimney. It consists of three key parts:
1. Base Layer: Attached to both the roof and the chimney, it is the primary barrier against water infiltration.
2. Counter or Cap Flashing: Shaped like an L, this metal piece is fixed to the chimney’s mortar joints, directing water away from the inside.
3. Step Flashing: Also L-shaped, this layer is placed under the shingles and seals the joint between the chimney and roof for extra protection.
Together, these components keep your chimney secure and your space dry.
