I saw Dr. Shedden in early February for left-side facial numbness and ear fullness on the same side. I went to him because he is regarded as experienced in treating trigeminal neuralgia.
Dr. Shedden was dismissive of my symptoms, condescending about other providers that I respect, and his note about our visit was incorrect - clearly copied and pasted from some other patient and absolutely not accurate to the topics we discussed or my actual medical history. He belittled neurologists, saying he had "100 textbooks" more knowledge than they do. Dr. Shedden refused to order imaging. Instead, he referred me to a mediocre dentist and an ENT with subpar training and terrible reviews, telling me that they are the best in the area.
I caught the error in my chart as I checked out. They were supposed to fix the note in my chart and email it to me, but his office staff is roughly as capable as he is and they never did.
Two months later, I finally got into UTHealth Neurology downtown. A neurologist there took me seriously and ordered an MRI, and guess what? I have an acoustic neuroma. It is large enough that it would have been caught two months ago if Dr. Shedden had cared enough to help me. I have literally every symptom, but Peter Shedden, founder of the Greater Houston Neurosurgery Center, told me this was not due to an operable issue.
I do actually need a neurosurgeon now, and it's laughable to think I would trust my health to Dr. Shedden. If you're in the same situation as me, look up Dr. Michael Sisti at Columbia Presbyterian for a masterclass in what competence, humility, and superior bedside manner look like, because you won't see these from Peter Shedden.
