Spot the Difference: Dallisgrass vs. Crabgrass 🌱
These two weeds often get mistaken for each other, but understanding their differences makes all the difference in controlling them:
🔹 Growth habit: Crabgrass spreads low and hugs the ground. Dallisgrass grows upright in coarse clumps.
🔹 Seed heads: Crabgrass produces smaller, light-colored seed heads at the top of the stem. Dallisgrass forms side-shooting seed heads with dark specks.
🔹 Life cycle: Crabgrass is an annual—it dies off in winter. Dallisgrass is a perennial—it survives cold and keeps coming back.
🔹 Control: Crabgrass is usually controlled with pre-emergent herbicides. Dallisgrass requires a mix: pre-emergents for new seed and post-emergents (or spot treatments) for established plants.
Knowing what’s in your lawn helps ensure the right treatment for a healthier, greener yard! 🌿
