Naan Breads are specific kind of thick 'Flat Bread' of South Asian cuisine and are very popular among diners in India and the Indian diaspora worldwide. Making Naan breads typically involves mixing white or whole wheat flour with active dry yeast or baking powder, salt, and water. Some varieties also add extra ingredients as raisins, lentils and spices. The dough is kneaded for a few minutes, then set aside to rise for a few hours. Once risen, the dough is divided into balls, which are flattened and cooked.
In some cases, milk or yogurt may also be used instead of water to end up with a softer dough. The naan is then cooked in a tandoor. This distinguishes it from roti, which is usually cooked on a flat or slightly concave iron griddle called a tava.
