Hey neighbors! With a solid week of rain ahead—and nearly 1.5″ expected this Wednesday—being prepared is key to protecting our homes and keeping basements and garages dry. Here’s a checklist to help you stay ahead of the storm:
✅ 1. Check your sump pump
Make sure it's working, clean the pit, inspect the discharge line for obstructions, and consider a backup power option
✅ 2. Clear gutters & downspouts
Remove leaves, twigs, and debris so water can flow freely. Extend downspouts at least 3–6 ft away from your foundation
✅ 3. Inspect storm drains/drainage areas
Check outdoor drains, catch basins, window wells—and remove any blockages
✅ 4. Check storm line daylight
Verify nothing is blocking the outlet where your storm line drains. Clear any debris.
💧 What if floodwater still appears? - Here is your Action Plan
1. Identify the source & flow direction – figure out where water’s coming from and how it's moving toward your structure.
2. Redirect it – options include stacking sandbags, digging a trench, or full excavation. Swales or French drains help too.
3. Give that water a new path away from your foundation—control the flow first, worry about restoration later.
4. Make sure to have Extension Cords, a Wet & Dry Vac and/or a Mini Sump Pump with a Garden Hose as a discharge line and be ready.
The number-one goal is to control the flood
