For people suffering from bunions and hammertoes, wearing shoes or boots can be painful. Conservative treatments for those conditions are not always effective, as the pain results from an actual deformity, but here are a few recommendations:
-Wear shoes that are measured to your arch length. This will ensure the widest part of the shoe accommodates your bunion.
-Purchase wider shoes, shoes with a deeper toe box, shoes with full-mesh construction, etc.
-Bunion and hammertoe splints are available. They do require a lot of maintenance and consistency, so dedication is key.
-Icing the area, decreased activity, anti-inflammatory medications, custom orthotics, and even weight-loss can go a long way in reducing inflammation and pain.
For those who do not have success with conservative methods, surgery can be an excellent option. Following a clinical evaluation and x-ray, we take time to review all findings, and discuss different surgical options. Post-operative care is followed closely and rehabilitation is straightforward.
