What to Do If Your Electric Garage Door Won’t Open?
If your electric garage door won’t open, begin by checking the power supply—ensure it’s plugged in and the circuit breaker hasn’t tripped. Next, test both the remote control and the wall switch. If the wall switch works but the remote doesn’t, replace its battery or reprogram it. Inspect the tracks for any debris, obstructions, or misalignment that could block the door's movement. Also, examine the safety sensors near the bottom of the door—clean them and make sure they’re properly aligned.
If you hear the motor running but the door doesn’t move, the springs may be broken. Since these are under high tension, call a professional for repairs. You can try using the manual release cord to open the door by hand, but do so with caution—especially if the springs are damaged, making the door very heavy.
Unusual sounds like grinding or humming could signal a mechanical issue with the motor or gears. If your opener is over 10–15 years old, it might be time for a replacement. When basic troubleshooting fails, contact a licensed technician for safe, effective repair.
