Our parents lived at Farmstead Living for just over a year. We initially chose this facility because of location and accessibility to our immediate need to place our mother. We greatly regret that and wish we had had more time to learn more about Farmstead and seek out a different place.
Our mother has dementia and is physically unable to move much on her own. She requires assistance to the bathroom. Our dad had to often remind her to use her alert button for assistance (a memory care resident doesn’t remember those things). There were too many times to count that mom had to wait 40+ min to be assisted to the bathroom. On her first night there, a family member stayed with her since dad had not moved over yet. During that night, we pressed the alert button several times after which the family member went to look for the person on duty only to find him sitting in the nurses station on his phone.
On several occasions, while in the bathroom, mom was left to sit there alone unsupervised. We feel fortunate that she did not attempt to get up herself for fear she would have fallen.
In another example of being left alone, our dad was left in the shower to finish, dry and dress himself. While he is mobile, we do not believe that is protocol or safe for a 94 year old man.
The most frustrating part of their stay at Farmstead was the lack of empathy from staff. Family members arrived one day to visit and were “greeted” with the questions, “here to visit Crabby Patty?” We were stunned by this reference to one of our parents. Not only was it VERY inappropriate but it also was said with another resident present and another person that I assume was a guest. A little empathy for residents would go a long way but they seem to lack that here. The staff has no idea what our parents were like prior to being placed here! They need to consider that before using such inappropriate statements.
After Farmstead’s first “violation” cited by MN Department of Health(March 2024), we began considering finding a new place for them. After the second violation (July 2024), where they didn’t make corrections from the first time, we knew it was time to get our parents out. We had never been happy with the care here so this was the last straw. Upon asking for the plan for improvement, we never heard a response though it is a state requirement to supply the plan upon request.
We are happy that our parents have now settled into what seems to be a more caring facility with more activities for memory care residents (Farmstead seems to have very little if anything actually geared for memory care).
If you have the luxury of time in making a decision to place your family member in an assisted living/memory care facility, we hope you find something better than Farmstead living.
