This just in from our Tallahassee International Airport campus: Ellie Brannan just flew her FIRST SOLO flight! She is pictured with her flight instructor, Hannah Gardner. Notice the shirt tail!
Have you heard of the shirt-tail cutting tradition in aviation? After a student pilot completes their first solo flight, their instructor cuts off the back of their shirt as a fun and symbolic way of saying, "You’ve got this!" This quirky ritual dates back to early American aviation, when instructors in tandem planes couldn’t communicate easily with students—so they'd tug on their shirts to give instructions! By cutting off the shirt tail, it meant the student was ready to fly solo, no tugging needed. Today, it’s a proud keepsake, often decorated with memories of that unforgettable milestone. ✈️👔✂️
Congratulations, Ellie! There is nothing like the first solo!
