FYI, a study (weblink below) for those with interest in fungal contamination of hygroscopic building materials, fungal diversity and susceptibility... prolonged periods of high relative humidity (RH) or intrusion of liquid water are the primary factors causing fungal growth in buildings.
The structure and appearance of contaminated materials can change due to moisture and fungal penetration. The amount, as well as the fluctuation of moisture (wet, chronically damp, or wet-dry-wet) influence fungal species diversity and abundance in damp buildings. (references contained with article).
