During this sand filter inspection I pulled the sight glass and spotted water rushing to waste even though the valve was set to filtration. A failed multiport gasket was letting water slip through nonstop. Once I unthreaded the union on the waste line, it was obvious the homeowner was losing water every time the pump was running. Since the waste line was plumbed underground, they never saw the water — but it was draining away the whole time. Problem found and fixed.
