I recently had a 90-minute head spa here, and I have mixed feelings. The experience had some amazing moments — my esthetician was kind, the massage and facial were relaxing, and the hair wash and keratin treatment were very gentle.
I went into this appt with FULL understanding that they are estheticians and not hair stylists so I wasn't expecting to leave with my. hair done. I expected to leave with it looking better than it did when I came, and that was not the case. As a Black woman with thick, 3C curls, my hair was not detangled or brushed at any point during the service, which left me with severe knots that took hours to fix at home. It was only brushed at the end of service when she asked me if I was ok (insinuating she was finished) and I requested a brush. At that point she did assist me with brushing, but this is after it had already been blowdried. I lost a handful of hair when I got home trying to detangle was she had already dried in place. I also felt misunderstood when my scalp was described as “oily” — the added oil is intentional for my type of hair care.
I think the spa could benefit from training staff to handle all hair types, as I left feeling unseen despite looking forward to the appointment. With more inclusivity, this could be a truly amazing experience for everyone.
