A balance isn't income. It's a snapshot.
Here's a hypothetical I walk through often. A couple, 64 and 62, both retiring next spring, mostly pre-tax savings.
Same accounts, same balances. In one version they claim Social Security first and draw from the IRA as needed. In the other, they decide the contractual portion of their income first, then choose a claiming age around it.
Same money. Different order. A different picture for taxes, for Medicare premiums two years later, and for whichever spouse is left with one Social Security check.
The trade-off is real: making part of your income contractual means giving up easy access to that money for a number of years, and guarantees depend on the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company.
So the question I'd ask is simple: which of your retirement decisions happens first?
Educational only; hypothetical example. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances; consult a qualified tax professional.
